Bio:

Dr. Jamie Dyson, PT, DPT, is a highly experienced and dedicated physical therapist with over 30 years of expertise in acute care physical therapy, particularly in the specialized areas of trauma and burn care. Throughout his career, Dr. Dyson has made significant contributions to patient care, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU) settings, where he has developed a deep proficiency in managing complex cases and providing rehabilitation for critically ill patients. 

Currently, Dr. Dyson practices at HCA Lake Monroe Hospital, where he plays a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients with severe trauma and burns. In addition to his clinical work, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Graceland University, where he mentors the next generation of physical therapists. His commitment to education and clinical excellence bridges the gap between academia and practice, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the challenges of the healthcare field. 

Dr. Dyson’s outstanding contributions to the profession have been widely recognized by his peers and professional organizations. He was honored with the Signe Brunnstrom Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching in 2013, acknowledging his exceptional skills in educating and mentoring students and clinicians alike. In 2017, he received the FPTA Fred Rutan Award for Outstanding Service, which highlights his significant impact on the profession through advocacy, education, and leadership. 

Further demonstrating his dedication to advancing the field, Dr. Dyson was awarded the APTA Lucy Blair Service Award in 2021, recognizing his exceptional service and leadership within the physical therapy community. His advocacy efforts were also recognized in 2024 with the FPTA Rick Shutes Award for Advocacy, and the APTA awarded him the Recognition of Legislative Commitment Award the same year for his significant contributions to legislative efforts that promote the advancement of physical therapy. 

Through his decades of clinical experience, educational impact, and tireless advocacy, Dr. Dyson continues to shape the future of physical therapy, both in the acute care setting and within the broader professional community. 

Education & Training:

Dr. Dyson is a certified instructor for Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) and holds both Basic and Advanced Clinical Instructor credentials from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University and later completed his transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (t-DPT) degree through A.T. Still University, further enhancing his clinical expertise and commitment to advancing the field of physical therapy. 

Areas of Interest:

Dr. Dyson is deeply passionate about working with complex cases in the critical care setting, where he finds great fulfillment in guiding students through the intricacies of patient care. His dedication to teaching and mentoring stems from the joy he experiences in watching students navigate challenging situations and ultimately thrive as skilled clinicians. The greatest reward for Dr. Dyson is seeing these students grow into leaders within the profession, carrying the torch forward and shaping the future of physical therapy. 

In recent years, Dr. Dyson’s professional focus has expanded to include the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19. Having witnessed the devastating impact of the pandemic firsthand as a physical therapist in the ICU, he is particularly committed to helping individuals who have survived COVID-19 but continue to experience lingering symptoms that affect their movement and overall function. His goal is to ensure these individuals receive the comprehensive care they need, through both education and empowerment, as they work toward recovery. 

In addition to his clinical and research interests, Dr. Dyson is deeply committed to leadership and mentorship, aiming to cultivate the next generation of physical therapists. He believes that fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment is crucial to developing future leaders who will continue to elevate the profession. 

Academic & Professional Activities:

Dr. Dyson is an active and dedicated member of the physical therapy community, contributing his expertise and leadership to several key organizations. He currently serves on the Acute Care Practice Committee of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and has previously contributed to the profession as a member of the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) Board of Directors. For three years, Dr. Dyson has been a mentor in the APTA’s Leadership Scholars program, guiding emerging leaders in the field. 

He has also played an instrumental role within the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA), having served as both Chapter President and Delegate, advocating for the advancement of the profession at the state level. In 2025, Dr. Dyson was elected to the APTA Board of Directors, further solidifying his commitment to shaping the future of physical therapy through leadership and service. 

Educational Material:

Dr. Dyson teaches courses on rehabilitation decision-making for medically complex patients and cardiopulmonary care for physical therapists. They also lead continuing education courses on pharmacology, polytrauma, leadership and mentorship, and the management of Long COVID.
