Course Description:

This course will provide updates and review of emerging evidence-based treatment and techniques related to brain injury rehabilitation and care. The principles presented aim to explore a diverse selection of innovative areas in brain injury rehabilitation. A variety of disciplines will be represented in this course as part of a holistic approach to optimal management of our patients.

Course Education Level: Intermediate

Course Objectives:

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

· Identify the dos and don’ts of physical interaction with a patient with a traumatic brain injury

· Identify ways in which a treatment session or cotreatment may be modified for increased success with a patient with a traumatic brain injury

· Understand the ways that technology is emerging in behavior management for patients with a traumatic brain injury

· Appropriately identify deficits resulting from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and their direct impact on student learning

· Identify the key stakeholders in a patient’s return to school (including the patient, family/caregiver, patient’s medical team, and the patient’s school team)

· Understand the central role of advocacy in a patient’s return to school

· Understand how key neural mechanisms after concussion contribute to clinical presentation of fear avoidance after injury

· Apply this knowledge to clinical decision-making through a case example

· Recognize common vestibular issues that can occur after traumatic brain injury (TBI)

· Understand the role of vestibular agnosia in symptom perception and balance deficits

· Describe common causes and patterns of dizziness and imbalance in TBI

· Summarize treatment approaches for posterior canal BPPV, including a comparison of the Li and Epley maneuvers

· Apply general clinical considerations when evaluating and managing individuals with TBI-related vestibular symptoms
