Course Description:
This course offers an introduction to understanding the presentation, pathophysiology and treatment of functional neurological disorders (FND). Participants will learn the background of how our concept and identification of FND has changed over the years to appreciate the current challenges in diagnosis. The content then shifts to learning how to test for the presence of FND and offers treatment interventions. This course is dynamic with presentations, group problem solving, practicing tests application and case presentations.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize atypical movement patterns that are incongruent with traditional musculoskeletal or neurological diagnoses.
- Describe contributing factors that may be predisposing factors for functional neurological disorders
- Summarize the neuroscience related to the development and maintenance of functional neurological disorders
- Identify signs and symptoms that may be suggestive of the presence of functional neurological disorders
- Contrast movement disorder displayed in functional neurological disorders to movement disorders of other common neurological diagnoses
- List typical motor signs associated with functional neurological disorders
- Perform movement tests to assist in identifying the presence of functional neurological disorders
- Discuss recommended treatment interventions utilizing a comprehensive management approach
