Course Description:
This course will provide updates and review of emerging evidence-based treatment and techniques related to limb loss rehabilitation and care. The principles presented aim to explore a diverse selection of innovative areas in limb loss rehabilitation. A variety of disciplines, including therapy and physician, will be represented in this course as part of a holistic approach to optimal management of our patients.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• To discuss treatment strategies that exhibit social and psychological awareness to patients following an amputation while patients are freshly grieving loss of a limb(s)
• Differentiate phantom limb pain from residual limb pain using evidence-based diagnostic reasoning linked to pain mechanisms.
• Select effective rehabilitation and management strategies for phantom limb pain and residual limb pain based on clinical presentation.
• Identify prosthetic types
• Identify gait deviations and when it’s a PT problem vs prosthetic problem
• Apply concepts in order to teach prosthetic gait training to your patient
• Summarize the role of therapy in treating amputee patients with regards to intimacy
• Explain the physical and emotional needs when addressing sex and intimacy
• Identify common problems seen in amputee clinic
• Describe how to develop a plan of care for amputee complications
