Course Description:
This case-based course provides physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) with comprehensive practical knowledge and skill in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction in the pregnant and postpartum patient. Required testing will prepare the participant for an Inter-active learning experience. Cases covering low back and pelvic girdle pain, coccydynia, pubic symphysis separation, and transient osteoporosis in pregnancy will provide the clinician with extensive skill and knowledge for clinical decision making for this unique population. The course will also provide background in maternal physiology and anatomic changes of pregnancy and the postpartum period as well as the etiology and the pathophysiology of high-risk pregnancy and birth, diastasis recti abdominis, and perinatal pelvic floor dysfunction. Cases will include evidence for and psychomotor competency in manual therapy options for this population, exercise interventions, belts, supports and orthoses for this population, as well as discussion on indications and contraindications for physical agent usage during the childbearing year. Outcome measures will be discussed as they apply to the cases.

Course Objectives:
At the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the normal process of labor and delivery.
  • Describe the normal musculoskeletal and physiologic changes of pregnancy.
  • Describe body mechanic techniques and dysfunctions specific positioning options for the pregnant client.
  • Apply to patient care the pathophysiology of various obstetric musculoskeletal disorders commonly seen in this population.
  • Practice and apply treatment interventions to the pregnant and postpartum client for these musculoskeletal dysfunctions.
  • Develop appropriate home programs for clients with such musculoskeletal dysfunction.
  • Utilize commonly known and evidence-based outcome measures for this population.
  • Utilize current evidence for the interventions the participants discuss and practice

Course certificates will be provided at the completion of the course for those that meet the course completion requirements. Certificates will be mailed for courses that include a post-course test

Testing, Attendance, and Participation:

Course Tests:
All participants must take the Post course online test. Physical Therapist participants must also pass psychomotor skills testing. Participants who pass all of the testing and attend the entire course will receive a Certificate of Completion. Participants who do not pass testing but attend the entire course will be granted a Certificate of Attendance.

Clinical Skills Testing:
Physical Therapists participants are expected to participate in all clinical skills testing during the course. Participant who do not pass the psychomotor skills test and the post course test but attend the entire course will be granted a Certificate of Attendance. Participants who pass all of the testing and attend the entire course will receive a Certificate of Completion. Physical Therapist Assistant participants may not participate in clinical skills testing except as a simulated patient for a physical therapist participant who is testing.

Post course Online Testing:
Participants are expected to complete the required post course online testing no later than 2 weeks after the end of the live course. The post test will be sent to the course participants the week following the course.

Lab Participation:
Participants must be prepared to fully engage in the interactive labs in this course including vaginal and rectal examination and treatment techniques (not applicable for this course). Participants must come prepared to participate as both clinician and patient. Participants, who cannot, for any reason, participate as simulated patients in lab must provide their own surrogates. Male participants must provide a surrogate for vaginal and rectal examination and treatment. Please contact Brooks to inquire about hiring a simulated patient to act as a surrogate. Pregnant participants must bring a signed permission note from her physician to participate.

Attendance:
Participants are expected to stay through the entire course in order to receive the most benefit from the course, and to earn all of the CEUs for the course. Anyone needing to miss more than one hour will have the number of CEUs altered on his or her Certificate, and may be required to purchase additional instruction and complete course work in order to obtain a Certificate of Completion (at the instructor’s discretion).

Satisfactory Course Completion:
Full course attendance (including signing the attendance sheet each day), psychomotor skills test, online post course test and lab participation.
