Course Description:
This course will begin with an overview of a typical presentation for patients with a cancer diagnosis, including common presenting complaints as well as key red flags and contraindications to consider prior to initiating treatment. Learners will then explore the purpose and clinical application of myofascial techniques for patients following cancer treatment, with an emphasis on their value in this population and broader clinical contexts. The course will also include hands-on training focused on the application of techniques and accurate muscle identification for both external and intraoral regions. Participants will review case studies that reinforce and apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout the session. Finally, they will comprehend application beyond the diagnosis of cancer and how effective plans of care can assist within other patient care situations.

Course Objectives: 
Participants will be able to: 

  • Explain the commonly seen effects of head and neck cancer treatment in rehabilitation settings.
  • Demonstrate safe and efficient myofascial release techniques
  • Integrate myofascial release techniques into the treatment plan for patients with varying diagnoses (i.e., swallowing, voice, posture, breathing, and cervical mobility)
  • Develop appropriate home exercise programs that include long-term maintenance plans
  • Identify when and why one would initiate interprofessional collaboration with physical therapists into the management plan.
