Course Description:
This course provides an overview of emerging evidence-based treatments and techniques in cancer survivorship and rehabilitation. It examines key principles and highlights diverse, innovative approaches to optimizing rehabilitation outcomes for cancer survivors. A multidisciplinary perspective is emphasized to support comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the new adaptive oncology wellness program and describe how to refer patients
- Discuss the importance of exercise for cancer survivors and how it impacts their quality of lift
- Recognize the physical signs of radiation fibrosis (e.g., skin thickening, muscle contracture, and joint restrictions), be able to educate cancer survivors on the chronic, long-term nature of radiation fibrosis and the importance of long-term exercise adherence.
- Design an individualized, exercise prescription for cancer survivors by evaluating fatigue levels and modifying exercise parameters based on the patient’s phase of treatment and medical red flags.
- Identify at least three common sources of infection and explain why cancer survivors may have an increased risk due to compromised immune function.
- Understand at least four evidence-based infection prevention practices—such as proper hand hygiene, food safety, and recognizing early signs of infection—to reduce their risk in daily life.
- Describe ongoing medications, side effects, pain, and psychosocial effects of treatment for breast cancer past active treatment
- Explain symptoms, behaviors, and considerations that are important for rehab professionals to be aware of to assist in survivorship success
