This course will offer a unique understanding of the physiological and psychological differences between males and female athletes. You will better understand important health issues that will affect female athletes throughout her lifetime including body image, nutrition, pregnancy and bone health. We will discuss the prevalence and incidence of specific sport-related injuries in the female population as well as the evidence-based options for their management.
Describe the physiological and psychological differences between the male and female athletes that impact performance
Recognize and effectively treat orthopedic problems that are commonly found in female athletes
Determine the proper course of management of the Female Athlete Triad including disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, and osteoporosis
Understand proper nutrition practices for women in order to provide appropriate education
Perform an evaluation and determine the appropriate plan of care for the pregnant and post-partum athlete
Describe the physiological and biomechanical individualities of the aging female athlete
Recognize and effectively follow an established plan of care for treatment of orthopedic problems that are commonly found in female athletes
Recognize the need for referral to additional services regarding this population such as disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, and osteoporosis
Understand proper nutrition practices for women in order to develop a collaborative plan of care with the physical therapist to provide appropriate education
Understand appropriate exercise modifications for the pregnant and post-partum athlete
Understand appropriate exercise modifications for the aging female athlete
